One of your jobs here on earth is to learn how to celebrate yourself. For women this can be challenging, because we’re taught to stay small and put everyone and everything first — our job, our kids, our spouse, the dog, the laundry… Once you’re done with all your chores there’s no time or energy for you. But unless you honor, love and care for yourself, you won’t have the internal and external resources to care for others.

Without pausing for me time life starts to feel like you’re running on a hamster wheel constantly spinning from one thing on your to-do-list to the next. Sure you promise to reward yourself with a hot bath, a chick flick or a good book and cup of tea, but instead you immediately dive into the next project.

There’s a reason that when you fly you’re instructed to put your own oxygen mask on first. If you can’t breath you can’t help anyone including yourself. So take time today to celebrate yourself. Cheer yourself on when you reach a goal and give yourself credit when you accomplish something. Even the small things count. Cooking a healthy meal, trimming the bushes, exercising five days in a row, or losing a little weight so you fit into your skinny jeans.

Celebrating yourself is an act of self-compassion because it increases self-kindness and decreases self-criticism. Celebration also gives life meaning, which is why there are so many holidays on the calendar. Rather than always worrying about outcomes and only focusing on goals celebrating reminds you to enjoy your JOurneY. If you’re a people pleaser, like so many of the women I know and work with, celebrating fills you up internally so that you don’t need to seek the approval of others. Celebrating yourself also increases how you value yourself, which sets you up to be more successful in life. And if you want more joy — that delicious feeling of pleasure and happiness — and positivity in your life celebrating yourself will increase your capacity.

The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate. —Oprah Winfrey

What are you doing today to celebrate you? Not sure? Do something today that makes you happy. Dress up, buy yourself flowers, take a long nap, or treat yourself to a lovely lunch. You deserve it.

Here’s an easy exercise to get you started on the road to celebrating YOU.

1. List at least 10 things you like about yourself.

2. Write the list down and put it in your wallet.

3. When you feel bad about yourself or need a pick-me-up pull it out, read it and celebrate your self.
